Here are some pictures of Chinese sculptures I took in temples or museums, which are ordered chronologically from Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC – 256 BC) to Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD). The style of Chinese sculptures varied over dynasties. Perhaps the greatest change happens after the introduction of Buddhism, which brought new styles from areas currently in India and Pakistan (also see picture of grottoes). Chinese artists gradually digest these new elements and styles and creat their own style in buddhist and taoist sculptures. Interestingly, the sculpture related to funerary art and court art, such as the guardians in front of the tomb, still remained on the track of the style in the pre-buddhism age, with characteristics of shallow-carving and being non-decorative, which has an indepedent origin on its own.
